THE HOME

The home, according to Merriam Webster Dictionary is the social unit formed by a family living together. Oxford Dictionary also defines it as a family living together and the way it behaves. All these definitions have one thing in common which is "The Family". The building does not make up a home, but the lives in it. Therefore, family is a group of people who are related to each other, such as a mother, a father, and their children (Cambridge Dictionary). The home is a universal phenomenon. It does not only exist at a particular place or determined by a tribe or nation; it involves all the people in the world. It serves as the smallest and most basic social unit which has tremendous influence on the life of individual.

The centre of individual's life either as a child or an adult is the home. The family is responsible for the production and upbringing of children. It teaches a child basic rules and norms of social life. The child interacts first with the family and learn about relationships, feelings, expressions, emotions, and responses. Therefore, the home shapes one's characteristics, principles, values, and attitudes.

Moreover, the best support system financially, emotionally, spiritually is the family. It supports and always brings out the best in its members. They help one another to become successful in their endeavours. Through thick and thin, the family will always be there, praying and interceding for one another (A family that prays together stays together). They grow and get together.

Unfortunately, some home lack these features. The home can also mean the type of family one came from either healthy or dysfunctional family. A dysfunctional family produces children of all kinds of social vices because the home refuses to serve its purpose. This has led to suicide, feeling of being left out, depression, loneliness, poor health and development, and so on. The most dangerous consequence of this type of family is that history tends to repeat itself. An individual raised in a dysfunctional family is likely to raise a dysfunctional family too.

As a result of these, the society which the home serves as a basic unit for becomes endangered leading to alteration in the effective development of the society. Peace within the home is equivalent to peace between or among families, communities, nations, countries, and the world at large.

In all, the home remain the comfortable backbone of every individual. An individual who lacks blissful home should remain passionate about overcoming the challenges and do well to seek help because bad history should not repeat itself.
