MINUTES OF THE REGIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING AND LEADERSHIP SUMMIT HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN ON THE 14TH OF DECEMBER, 2024.
On the 14th of December, 2024, the NASELS Leadership Summit began at 10:30 AM. The delay was due to the late arrival of guest speakers, for which the Regional Director apologized. The event opened with the recitation of the NASELS anthem led by Dr. Phillip Babalola. This was followed by an introduction of participants from several universities, including University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Ajayi Crowther University, Federal University Oye Ekiti, Adekunle Ajasi University Akungba, Redeemers University, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ekiti State University affiliate Campus Oyo State, Osun State University, and The University of Ibadan
Comr. Abdulmalik, the 8th Regional Director, led the ALUTA anthem and some gyrations. Afterward, the leadership training session began, facilitated by Dr. Phillip Babalola. Key topics discussed included effective leadership skills, networking and collaboration, and the importance of delegating tasks. To close this segment, Comr. Obafayi gave a brief address.
Following the summit, the REC meeting started with an opening prayer by Comr. Owolabi. The Regional Director outlined the agenda and provided a summary of the last meeting. A review of the manifesto was also presented, highlighting plans to unify NASELS in the Southwest Region and connect active members with media houses across the region. The issue of regional dues was discussed, with a proposal to increase them from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000. After deliberations, the dues were reduced to ₦15,000 following a motion. The deadline for the payment of the Regional Due is set to 30th January and Chapter who do not pay before the deadline will pay the sum of 30,000 by the time they will be paying. Likewise chapters who do not pay before WESTCOSELS will be denied attendance at WESTCOSELS and will not be able to participate at the coming election of the Region or even given an appointment.
The administration's achievements were presented, including workshops on journalism, public speaking, and cyberbullying. A new WhatsApp platform for Southwest NASELSITES, with over 1,000 members, was created, along with the NASELS Southwest channel, which now has over 300 followers. Monthly challenges for members were introduced, and courtesy visits were made to the Grand Patron of NASELS. Officers were appointed across all states for fair representation, and the Periscope magazine transitioned from an annual to a monthly publication. Regional tours to schools like UI, LASU, and others were also completed.
Looking ahead, the administration plans to host an online gaming tournament featuring COD and eFootball in December 2024. An inter-school essay competition is planned for 2025, alongside preparations for WESTCOSELS 2025. Other activities include a “Face of NASELS Southwest” contest and enhanced student engagement.
Issues raised during the meeting included the need for better guidelines for publishing members’ works, improved delegation of duties, concerns about NASELS gatherings being seen as party events, and the inclusion of State Directors in decision-making processes.
Plans for WESTCOSELS 2025 were also outlined. Social activities will include stage performances by live thespians showcasing literature works and a themed dinner with a masked ball and the Regional Directors’ night. Academically, graduates will present their project works in a defense-style format, and academic lectures will be delivered by notable figures, such as Niyi Osundare. Debates and essay-writing competitions will also adopt creative formats.
The hosting rights for WESTCOSELS 2025 are being contested by the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos. Both universities must secure approval from their respective Heads of Department to host the event. The decision will be based on these approvals and further deliberations.
In conclusion, the meeting addressed key achievements, plans, and challenges while laying a solid foundation for the success of upcoming events, particularly WESTCOSELS 2025. The Regional Director expressed gratitude to attendees and encouraged collective efforts to achieve the region's goals.
